After my first encounters with the Rolleicord 1a — 2 — Model K3 a friend had given me as a present, I decided to take a closer look at this piece of fine engineering. What prompted me was that a Rolleicord was probably the first camera that my mother, Sieglinde Hefftner had used as a keen amateur and later as a professional photographer in the s. Digging through the family archives I came across some photographic evidence of her activities.

Some of the images I dug out show Sieglinde at work at the retouching desk of the lab, or at company parties of the photographic studio that she worked for.

The Rolleicord was a medium-format twin lens reflex camera made by Franke & Heidecke (Rollei) between and It was a simpler, less expensive.

When a camera is enclosed within such a supplementary protective housing to enable taking of pictures under water, it’is necessary, of course, to provide external control members accessible on the outside of the protective housing, for operating the various parts of the camera within the housing, such as the film winding mechanism, the shutter controls, etc. The number of separate control members passing through the wall of the protective housing should preferably be reduced to a minimum, since each control member extending through the housing wall presents an additional hazard of leakage of water into the housing.

The present application constitutes in part an improvement upon my copending application filed concurrently herewith, Serial No. An object of the present invention is to provide satisfactory and simple mechanism by which a filter or a supplementary lens may be held in either effective or ineffective position, as desired, on a camera located within a watertight protective housing, without requiring any special shaft passing through a wall of the protective housing, thereby reducing the ‘number of shafts which have to be sealed in a watertight manner.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means for holding a supplementary optical element such as a filter ,or a supplementary lens in such manner that it is shifted by gravity from effective to ineffective position, and vice versa, and is held in its selected position by gravity. Still another object is the provision of supplementary locking mechanism for locking the holder positively in either effective or ineffective position, as desired, which locking mechanism is controlled by another shaft which serves another control purpose, without requiring a separate shaft of its own.

These and other desirable objects may be attained in the manner disclosed as an illustrative embodiment of the invention in the following description and in the ac- ‘Fig.

It was a simpler, less expensive version of the high-end Rolleiflex TLR, aimed at amateur photographers who wanted a high-quality camera but could not afford the expensive Rolleiflex. Several models of Rolleicord were made; the later models generally had more advanced features and tend to be valued higher in today’s market. The first Rolleicord, introduced in November , was the Rolleicord I. This camera was a simplified version of the Standard Rolleiflex, with a cheaper 75mm Zeiss Triotar lens and a simplified film advance mechanism using a knob instead of the crank found on the Rolleiflex.

The Rolleicord I was available either with a plain leatherette covering or elaborately patterned metal faceplates.

Really all it is, is a desire to try all of the cameras!!! We have started collecting many vintage cameras now over the past few years, but in an effort to not let our collection get out of hand we decided to only collect cameras that work and can actually be used. However, not all are winners and some are just easier or more fun to use but you have to shoot with them first to find out! Thus, we decided if we run a roll through every camera we are interested in, not unlike going on a 5 minute date with a bunch of strangers at a singles night, we can quickly see which are worthy of being added to our collection.

For that a number of authoritative works fulfill the job. If you are reading this page, most probably you read Ian Parker’s Rollei TLR – The History , a fantastic account of the history of Rolleiflex camera development, and you are familiar with the Rollei Report 1 by Claus Prochnow, the major source of details on technical and historical factory facts, and the beautiful and comprehensive book of John Phillips The Classic Rollei – A definitive Guide , showing all Rolleiflex and Rolleicord models and their features.

My own experience is limited and derives from a small collection of this model gathered in the past few years, however when analyzing in detail a number of cameras I found that the information given by Ian Parker, Claus Prochnow and John Phillips, albeit authoritative and rich in historical and technical details, has some inconsistencies. I have no access to official Rollei archives or any priviledged sources, but cameras don’t lie. Cross-section of the Rolleiflex Original from a brochure.

Claims priority, application Germany July 11, 6 Claims. In cameras having a picture-taking chamber and a mirror reflex focusing view-finder chamber arranged above the picture-taking chamber in a common housing in other words, what is commonly known as a twinlens reflex camera , the image seen on the focusing screen does not always, because of parallax, agree in position with the image striking the film.

It is consequently desirable to have a parallax compensation for the focusing viewfinder chamber so that the image appearing on the focusing screen is in the same position relative to thepicture area of the focusing screen, as the image produced by the taking lens is relative to the picture area or frame on the film. With a multi-format camera, of course, the amount of image shift necessary to compensate for parallax at any given focusing distance is the same for each of the formats, but is is difiicult to provide mechanism for automatically shifting the format mask to compensate for parallax, if the mask is placed in the usual conventional position on top of the ground glass focusing screen.

An object of this invention is to provide a new and improved parallax compensation mechanism for mirror reflex cameras. Another object of this invention is to provide a new and improved parallax compensation arrangement for multi-format cameras of the type having a picture-taking chamber and a focusing view-finder chamber mounted one above the other in a common housing. A further object is the provision of a new and improved parallax compensation mechanism for mirror reflex cameras which is useful in providing parallax compensation for a variety of formats.

A still further object is the provision of a new and improved parallax compensation mechanism for multiformat reflex cameras which is simple while yet being correlated with the placement of various format masks. These and other desirable. The following disclosure of the invention presupposes familiarity with the main constructional features of the Rolleiflex camera, and for those not already familiar with the construction of this camera, reference may be made to the book Rollei Photography, Handbook of the Rolleifiex and Rolleicord Cameras, by Jacob Deschin, published in by Camera Craft Publishing Company, of San Francisco, California.

In Fig. To the top of the frame 1 at one edge are secured a pair of spaced hinges 2 for hingedly mounting a focusing screen frame 3. As will subsequently be more clear, the frame 3 is movable between an open position as shown in Fig. A focusing screen 4, which takes the formof a ground glass screen, is mounted in a sub-frame 5 which is suspended on the frame 3 by means of a pair of spaced springs 6 at either side.

Camera review: The Rolleicord 1a – 2 – Model K3 – by Jens Kotlenga

The International Rollei Club is since the early years of the internet the World’s leading information resource for Historic and current Rollei and Rolleiflex cameras and related photograpic equipment. Victor Hasselblad met that other pioneer of medium format photography, Reinhold Heidecke who with Paul Franke was responsible for that other epoch-making camera: the Rolleiflex twin lens reflex at the Photokina in Cologne.

Victor Hasselblad invited Heidecke to come over to Sweden, and the following year Heidecke indeed did. Besides discussing all sorts of technical matters camera pioneers like to discuss, they arranged a photo shoot. The participants, as well as the subject matter, were the two camera makers themselves.

The start of has been challenging. My house has endured upheaval because we took the decision, maybe unwisely in some respects, to replace the carpet throughout the ground floor, stairs and landing after 25 years. Spiders were disturbed and as always, long misplaced items once again saw the light of day. The charity shops were very grateful, the dustmen not so. It was similar to moving house, everything was boxed for ease of moving back and forth; a logistical nightmare with furniture and chattels being moved from room to room in a random circular fashion so that the carpet layer could work sequentially in areas that combined efficiently to suit his working day.

My workshop had its fair share of boxes too. To add insult to injury we subsequently planned to make better use of available space to house newly found possessions and decided to replace two chests of drawers with wardrobes. More boxes were moved into my hidey-hole. I had offered to scan a friend’s folder of historic family negatives but my scanner and the negative folder on top of my desk were now buried under 12 inches of documents waiting to be filed together with a large quantity of photographica.

Access to cupboards and filing cabinet were blocked with boxes, the contents of which were and still are waiting to be unloaded into those storage facilities which they are still blocking.
